Alarms
Section R317
Smoke alarms are required:
- In each sleeping room.
- Outside each separate sleeping area.
- On each level of the dwelling except crawl spaces or uninhabited
attics.
Smoke alarms shall be hard-wired and interconnected in all sleeping
areas.
Existing buildings shall be provided with smoke detectors when interior
work requiring a permit is done.

Emergency Escape and Rescue Openings
Section R310
At least one emergency egress or rescue window is required in every
sleeping room or basement with habitable space. They shall have:
- Finished sill height of not more than 44 inches.
- A net clear opening area of 5.7 square feet.
- A minimum clear opening width of 20 inches.
- A minimum clear opening height of 24 inches.
- Ladders or steps from window wells greater than 44 inches in
depth.
- No bars, grates or grills unless they can be easily opened
without special knowledge or tools.
- Window wells with net clear area of 9 square feet and minimum
horizontal projection and width of 36 inches, if openings are
below grade.

Do you require cut sheets for bars, grates or grills covering required
emergency egress or rescue windows? Do you provide for a fire department
plan review of townhouse projects so that they might pre-plan the
buildings for future emergencies?
