International Residential Code
Guards
Section R316
- Porches, balconies or raised floors more than 30 inches above
grade or walking surface below shall be provided with a minimum
36-inch-high guard (guardrail).
- Open-sided stairs shall have a minimum 34-inch-high guard when
they have a rise exceeding 30 inches above the adjacent floor
or grade.
- Openings in guards shall not allow a 4 inch sphere to pass.
- Closures in guards shall not have horizontal rails nor create
a ladder effect.
Discussion items: Do guards that are not required by this code
need to meet the code's requirements for height and spacing of closures?
At what angle do closures create a ladder effect? 30 degrees? 45 degrees?
60 degrees? You may want to discuss this question in your organization.
